Factors Affecting the Quality of Alloy Steel Castings

Alloy steel castings are mostly used for grooming of machine parts or making precision castings for key parts of machines, etc. However, the quality of alloy steel castings should be strictly controlled in whatever aspect they are used, otherwise the castings with quality problems will affect the use effect of machinery and equipment. 1. Design technicality of castings:

In order to avoid or reduce the defects such as component segregation, deformation and cracking of castings, the rationality of design should be considered from the angle of casting alloy and casting process characteristics besides determining the geometry shape and size of castings according to working conditions and properties of metal materials, i.e. obvious size effect and solidification, shrinkage and stress.

2. Reasonable casting technology:

That is to say, according to the structure, weight and size of alloy steel castings, casting alloy characteristics and production conditions, proper parting surface and moulding and core-making methods are selected, and casting bars, chills, risers and gating systems are reasonably set up to ensure excellent castings.

3. Quality of raw materials for foundry:

Metal furnace charge, refractory material, fuel, flux, modifier, casting sand, moulding sand binder, paint and other materials are not up to standard, which will cause defects such as porosity, pinholes, slag inclusion and sand sticking in alloy steel castings, which will affect the appearance and internal quality of castings, and will cause castings to be scrapped in serious cases.

4. Process operation:

Reasonable process operation rules should be formulated to improve the technical level of workers so that the process rules can be implemented correctly. In manufacturing, the quality of castings should be controlled and inspected. First of all, we should formulate the process codes and technical conditions from raw materials and auxiliary materials to the control and inspection of each specific product. The control and inspection of each process are strictly in accordance with the process code and technical conditions. Finally, the quality of finished castings is inspected. Reasonable testing methods and appropriate testing personnel should be equipped. Generally, the surface roughness of alloy steel castings can be judged by comparing sample blocks, and the surface micro-cracks can be checked by coloring method and magnetic powder method.
